North-West Language Workshops

WATHAURONG INTERACTIVE CD

A group of 30 intrepid would be actors from the Wathaurong community made their way to Koornoo to make a short film. The film was about a community group going to Koornoo on a camping trip. Everyone who was involved in the making of the film had a fantastic time. It was a real community event with people saying it was the best 2 days ever, despite being down at Koornoo at 8am on Sunday morning in very cold and sometimes wet and windy conditions!!

CERT III, IV AND DIPLOMA IN AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES

VACL would like to introduce the new TAFE Certificate III, IV and Diploma course in Australian Indigenous Languages! This new program is a partnership between VACL, the Yirruk-Tinnor Gunnai Community Language Program and the Koorie Unit at Gippsland TAFE and will be held at GippsTAFE in Morwell. The Certificate III and IV courses will be offered in the second half of 2006 with the Diploma course beginning in 2007/8.

Geelong Language Workshop

Representatives from different language centres around Victoria joined the workshop which focused on exchanging information between the different programs and giving an update of what each centre has been up to. The two day workshop was a great success and an invaluable opportunity for everyone to keep in touch with developments in language across the state and interstate as well. Thank you to the Wathaurong Language Centre for hosting the event.

LANGUAGE TOUCHSCREEN @ COMMONWEALTH GAMES

The Commonwealth Games saw 90,000 international and interstate visitors come to Melbourne earlier this year. VACL developed a touch-screen information display that was exhibited at Federation Square during the Games. The interactive display covers topics such as the different cultures and language areas that have existed in Victoria for thousands of years. The development of the display has helped to raise awareness of Victorian Indigenous languages for both tourists and residents and depicted the culture in a bright and fascinating light.

KURLANA MIKA – NATIONAL ROUNDTABLE

A landmark meeting was held in Adelaide in November 2005, when representatives from Language Centres all around the country came together at the FATSIL National Indigenous Languages Roundtable, - Kurlana Mika New Horizons.
The language centre delegates gave presentations on the progresses of language work in their communities. These presentations showed how early projects have been adapted by the communities and used as building blocks to create further resources and teaching programs.

Wergaia Language Workshop - Horsham

VACL recently attended the Wergaia Language workshop held in Horsham. The workshop was organized by the Department of Education on behalf of the Wotjobaluk people to investigate methods of reviving the local language particularly through the education system. Little ones, teenagers and elders from the local community as well as community linguists and teachers, were in attendance.

MCEETYA - National Statement for Languages Education in Schools

Languages education for all students is a relatively new concept in the history of Australian schooling. While the study of languages has long been an established part of the curriculum in many secondary schools, it was generally seen as an area of study for the academically able.
In 2003, the Ministerial Council of Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) undertook a Review of Languages Education in Australian Schools.

Heywood Language Workshop

VACL held a language Workshop for the South-West Region of Victoria. The two day workshop was held at Winda-Mara Aboriginal Corporation in Heywood which was attended by all the language workers from the Community Language Programs and several representatives from local schools and various members of the local community.

FATSIL FORUM ALICE SPRINGS 2004 – A CELEBRATION OF LANGUAGES

There were songs, dance, tears and laughter at the FATSIL National Indigenous Languages Forum in Alice Springs, which brought people from all over the country to share in the very rewarding experience over three days. Over three days, conference delegates appreciated the information presented by many of the well-established language programs and some of the programs in the earlier stages of language reclamation work.

VCE INFO DAY

In September VACL held a VCE Languages Subject information day for prospective schools wishing to teach Indigenous Languages. Uncle Sandy Atkinson (VACL Chairperson) opened the info day by stressing the importance of holding onto language as in the earlier days language was gone and best forgotten.

YARRA VALLEY WORKSHOP

VACL held a workshop over three days in June at the Yarra Valley Conference Centre. The attendees were staff from VCAA, DET, Heather Bowe, VACL CLPs, VACL Committee Members and staff. The workshop was an excellent opportunity for the CLPs from around the state to meet and share their experiences with their language programs. Everyone had a great day and took the opportunity to make important links and share knowledge on language revival.
